Brij Bhushan Kabra The guitar is a recent foreign introduction to the world of Hindustani music. Its best known exponent player is Brijbhushan Kabra. His long, illustrious career is largely noted for his efforts in introducing the guitar, a western instrument, into the realm of Indian classical music. He is known for his experimental techniques, and his sincere, subtle tonal qualities. During the 1960s he was involved in the making of two significant albums through which he came to a wide international audience. The more important of the two was Call of the Valley, a collaboration with santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma and flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia. The second was Two Raga Moods on Guitar (World Pacific WPS 21452). Describing him on the sleeve of Call of the Valley in 1968, G.N. Joshi wrote, "Brijbhushan Kabra hails from Jodhpur and took to guitar playing about ten years ago under the guidance of Ali Akbar Khan. His proficiency and skill in producing Indian classical music on a Western instrument have received acclamations from critics and listeners alike." It was the start of a long and illustrious career. ~ Ken Hunt, All Music Guide Kadar Khan Kadar Khan arrived in the U.S. in 1988, and brought with him a rich tradition of Indian classical music, and the desire to propagate this music internationall Kadar Khan was born in Rajasthan, India into a family of professional musicians. He began his musical training at age seven under the strict tutelage of his father and guru, Ustad Reheman Khan. It was Ustad Reheman Khan who passed on to Kadar Khan the four traditional styles of tabla playing: the Delhi, Ajarada, Lucknow, and Farukhabad gharanas, or “schools”. Kadar Khan carries on the traditional styles in their most authentic forms while also creating new works and compositions rooted in the time-honoured techniques and performance conventions of tabla playing. Kadar Khan is one of the most charismatic performers of Indian classical music today, who within his music creates complex rhythmic structures and improvisations with an energy and style rarely seen in a traditional musician. Notably, his artistry is rare in that he plays not only with singers and instrumentalists; he is also a masterful accompanist of Indian classical dance and an accomplished performer of solo tabla playing. |
