Purbayan Chatterjee (Sitar):


Today Purbayan is acclaimed by the top-most maestros in India as one of the best young instrumentalists of India. His style of playing, of which Pt. Nikhil Banerjee was the exponent, is the most aesthetically satisfying combination of the the best facets of "Dhrupad" and "Khayal". In a unique display of maturity, Purbayan is able to combine technical brilliance and virtuosity of the highest level with depth and serenity.

Born in 1976, Purbayan started learning music as a child from his father, Sri Parthapratim Chatterjee, a disciple of late sitar maestro Nikhil Banerjee as well as of sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Even today, Purbayan receives continuous guidance from his father, and recently Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has accepted him as his student. Purbayan also continues to receive advise from Ajoy Chakraborty and Anindo Chatterjee.

Purbayan started giving public performances when he was nine. He received the President's Award for being the best instrumental musician in the All India Radio Music Competition at the age of seventeen. In 1996 he performed in Great Britain and Germany and, in 1997, he had a very successful concert tour of U.S.A. Since then Purbayan has performed in major music conferences in India, and has been hailed as one of the brightest sitar performers of the younger generation.

Yogesh Samsi (Tabla):

Yogesh Samsi was initiated into tabla by his father at the tender age of six, and later received guidance under Pt. H. Taranath Rao and Ustad Alla Rakha. An 'A' grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan and a musician with a keen sense of rhythm and an intricate understanding of tala, Yogesh has given numerous solo performances as well as accompanied a large number of musicians of repute. He has also accompanied Ustad Allah Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain in their solo performances. Yogesh has performed in prestigious music festivals throughout India as well as Europe, USA, Canada, Japan and South Africa. Today, Yogesh has the distinction of being regarded as one of the most promising young tabla players in the world.
