Mission  of  ICMS

India Classical music society (ICMS) was founded in 1983 as a not-for-profit organization. The primary mission of ICMS is to preserve the great art form of Indian classical music and classical dances, and to pass this ancient Indian heritage to the future generations. ICMS fulfils its mission by sponsoring programs of classical music and dance of Indian origin. ICMS is the only organization in Illinois which represents all forms of authentic Indian classical music and dance, and is an “equal opportunity” classical music and dance organizer. ICMS concerts have a balance of Hindustani and Carnatic music artists. All forms of dances—Bharathanatayam, Kathak, Manipuri, and Kuchipudi—have been organized. ICMS is operated by a dedicated and entirely voluntary board of directors.

Concerts:

ICMS organizes about 12 Indian classical music concerts and dances every year. High standards are maintained, whether the concerts are conducted by internationally recognized or local Illinois artists. In order to increase exposure and attract a diverse audience, ICMS schedules performances in various concert halls around the city, and arranges some presentations jointly with other organizations. ICMS participates in the outreach community program to expose a diverse population to the Indian classical music and dance. Some of these concerts have no admission fee. ICMS periodically recognizes local professional Indian classical musicians and dancers by sponsoring their concerts.

Youth Festival:

One of the major goals of ICMS is to foster the rich heritage of Indian classical music and dances in its traditional form, and to pass this art to the next generation. ICMS organizes its annual Youth Festival for young budding artists who are learning the great art forms of Indian classical music and dance from various teachers in the Chicago and nearby area. ICMS provides a professional setting for these performances and awards certificates to all the performers. This popular event attracts well over hundred participants every year.
